Life After Myspace. . .and a Weirdly Tenacious Water Metaphor

You know when you're in undergrad, and there's this huge smorgasbord of interesting things you could jump into head first. . .but you only have so many heads? I jumped into theatre and music, wearing by theology arm floaties, leaving philosophy, history, and literature on the dock. Along with mental stability, self-confidence, awareness of the outside world, and a few other interests I've been picking back up recently. (disclaimer: I do not imply that all theater folk doff these things when they leap naked into the great artistic morass - only that I myself struggled to keep my head above water. And yes, I'm giving myself ten points for metaphoric style in this paragraph.)

Anyway. Did the starving artist thing. Eventually the starving part (bad) beat out the artist part (good) and now I'm in law school.

It made sense at the time. Kind of. As much as anything did.

I spent a year fighting with my raised-catholic instincts toward martyrdom, trying to find a focus that both interested me and would make me money when I graduate.

Failed. (Bored silly.)

Decided to dip a toe into the environmental law pool, but some strange force of gravity (or lack of grace; I've never been particularly coordinated) dumped me in headfirst. Again. This time my arm floaties are my dogs and my long-suffering s.o., whom we will call Mr. Goggles. I'm discovering that I have other interests beyond pop-culture, Shakespeare and micro-brews (though all three remain strong in my affections). So, unless it mutates (and it might), I think this blog will be about some of my new fascinations. . .probably spiced liberally with the oldies but goodies mentioned above.

Food: I'm a vegetarian (late blooming. I blame the s.o.), a devoted foodie and dabbler in vegan cooking. Basically, I'm a little compulsive, and cooking gives me a nice feeling of control with a tasty reward at the end. We just started getting veggies from a CSA, so my creativity has been stretching a bit. (CSAs are like yoga for the cooking creativity. Particularly winter CSAs) And by creativity, I sort of mean googling-for-recipes-ivity.

Music: we have a band. I may mention it, I may not. I spend more time blabbing about it on www.js-show.com, so it will likely get less attention here. But we rock, and you should come see us.

Projects!: I've dabbled in carpentry, art and vermicomposting. I look forward to dabbling in (including, but not limited to) gardening, bird watching, and possibly having an urban chicken or two. And maybe some more art. I keep color crayons on hand at all times. Currently, the project blog is here. (www.law.gsu.edu/thedocket), but since I don't intend to stop playing in the dirt when i graduate, it will probably migrate over to this site eventually.

Health: I also intend to bitch about my work out experiences. Because I can, and because I think there's something inherently funny about twenty people virtuously running nowhere while watching commercials featuring undernourished, photoshopped waifs sensuously eating deep fried, dyed, genetically modified crap that they're going to spit out (or barf up) as soon as the camera stops rolling.

Funny on a good day. Horrifying on a bad day. You know how that goes.
